College Admissions is too hard!
Back in the day, when dinosaurs roamed the earth, most college students applied to one or two colleges. Most applied to a college within 50 miles of home, worked during the summer to pay for tuition, and graduated with a leg up in the job market. In the 21st century, students apply to 4-12 colleges, and those colleges might be all the way across the country, or even around the world! I'm sure I don't need to tell you that it's impossible to pay for a whole year of college with a summer job anymore, even at relatively inexpensive state schools.
Don't Panic!
The college consulting industry is booming because the process has become so complicated and so expensive. Counselors use special online tools like Naviance to put college information at their fingertips, and spend every day collecting and sorting information so they can put it to use for their students. Families with relatively uncomplicated college applications don't need a full-time counselor, but they can use some timely information and support to help them navigate the process with a minimum of sleepless nights.
